After A Week Long Send Off, My Round the World Trip kicked off with eight days in Maui visiting my sister Sarah who has split her time between Hawaii and Alaska for many years. What an epic way to start this adventure! There was mist falling when my sister greeted me at the Kahului airport on Maui a week ago, so she teased me about bringing the rain from the mainland. We headed straight for Paia where she presented me with a young coconut and a lei, accompanied by the chant for the gifting-of-a-lei.
A number of circumstances collided recently to compel me to move the Lucky Penny to my property in Walla Walla where I have a ground bound small house called Valencia Cottage. So on Tuesday trusted tiny house movers Linh and Stephanie Pham helped me move the Lucky Penny safely from Portland to my place in Walla Walla.
As I packed up recently in preparation to travel cross country in my Honda Fit, I did some downsizing… It was harder than it had been during my last couple of moves because this time I had more stuff. I’d been living in a bigger space…My apartment was a studio, but it was still about 6 times bigger than the Lucky Penny! I talked with several people about the experience and a handful of them said “oh my goodness, I need to do more of that!” So I’ve decided to offer a 6-week Downsizing Tune Up…
It's been a very productive week for our tiny house, T42. (It's also been a very exciting week for Isha and I because we made A Big Announcement!) This week, with the help of a few friends and a couple Tiny House Sidekicks, we managed to install the sleeping loft, the studio pocket door, the bathroom pocket door, the studio wall, the access hatch for our loo bucket, and do the first coat of paint on the interior of our little house.
On June 13-14 I'll be teaching a two-day Tiny House SIPs Wall Raising Workshop in Portland, OR in conjunction with Patrick Sughrue of Artisan Tiny House. Two weekends later we'll do a Tiny House Exterior Trim & Siding Workshop to install windows, rain screen, trim, and siding. On Saturday, October 26th I'll be teaching a Tiny Chair Workshop at ADX in Portland, OR. This is a Portland Alternative Dwellings workshop intended as a fun introduction to carpentry. Start small by building yourself a simple, comfortable tiny chair. In this 1-day workshop, you’ll learn how to safely use basic power and hand tools. You’ll head home with your very own tiny chair and the confidence to tackle the next project. The class has limited space, so sign up pronto on the ADX website!
"What is a tiny chair?" you ask. A tiny chair is a sweet little wooden and canvas chair that can be folded into itself and tucked away - or hung on the wall as a piece of art - how's that for turniture?! (I should also mention, as we head into the holiday season, that the chair would be a great gift for someone who is living light and the class itself would be a fun present for someone who is minimizing!)
"And where and what is this ADX place?" you wonder. ADX is a fabulous non-profit located in Portland's Central Eastside that is "building a community of thinkers and makers." They have a complete woodshop where we will be constructing our little chairs.
ADX is also where PAD Grad Ben is building his tiny house on wheels! You can follow along at Ben Builds a Tiny House. Ben attended the Pedalapalooza Tiny House Bike Tour and participated in the PAD building workshop for the Naj Haus Wall Raising. He's now raised the walls on his own little house. Once you've taken the Tiny Chair Workshop you'll be ready to lend a hand to Ben and other tiny house builders to get more hands-on experience before tackling your own tiny house build!
